“Shpat” is a mining SME company operating in Ukraine’s Zhytomyr region. The company employs 130 people and produces over 50,000 tonnes of pegmatite per year for construction, ceramic and porcelain industries both in Ukraine and abroad.
Energy efficient vehicles for mining industry
To decrease energy costs and expand the business, the company decided to invest in new efficient production vehicles, replacing the outdated fleet. The new vehicles included a loader, a dumper and a bulldozer.
The company addressed UKEEP for financing of this project.
The UKEEP team performed the analysis of the proposed technology, its potential for energy savings, profitability and financial-technical parameters.
The $300,000 investment allowed the company to reduce its fuel consumption by more than 25 per cent or 27,000 litres per year, saving over $32,000 in costs. At the same time, the project enabled the company to increase its production capacity – the extraction of kaolin – by 50,000 tonnes per year. The increased production will significantly add to the project’s profitability. Last, but not least, the project has a positive environmental impact by reducing 72 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year.
The project demonstrates that energy efficiency measures can be found in various industries and production processes, yielding benefits to businesses and environment.
The EBRD and UKEEP support the sustainable financing and implementation of energy efficiency and renewable energy projects by the private sector. Together, the private, residential, and public sectors can make a change in the energy consumption patterns and environmental protection.
