Case Study

Polish plastic straws manufacturer increases quality and efficiency

The company is a leading producer of straws for beverages and desserts since 1990. With the current production capacity of three billion straws per year and experience of working with demanding international customers like Pepsi and Coca-Cola, the company has high ambitions for development.

The company decided to modernise its production facilities to reduce energy consumption and increase product quality.

Previously, the company was using two 15-year-old extruders, while the new units consume less energy and provide additional services, such as individual wrapping of each straw.

The company addressed PolSEFF2 for an affordable financing for this investment.

The PolSEFF2 team performed the analysis of the proposed technology, its potential of energy savings, financial-technical parameters and profitability.

The investment of PLN 246,450 allowed the company to increase the production capacity by 44 per cent, while decreasing the overall energy consumption by 42 per cent. This leads to high specific energy consumption reduction. The investment will be repaid from energy savings in six years only. In addition, the company diversified its products and enhanced the market standing. Last, but not least, the company decreased its CO2 emissions by 82 tonnes per year, making its small, but valuable input to mitigation of the negative effect of human activity on climate.

The EBRD through PolSEFF2 supports the sustainable financing and implementation of energy efficiency and renewable energy projects by the private sector. Together, the private, residential, and public sectors can make a change in the energy consumption patterns and contribute to environmental protection.
