Case Study

Romanian wholesale trader achieves energy savings by replacing the machinery

Ficus Trade SRL is the wholesaler of soft and alcoholic beverages in the 200,000 inhabitants’ city of Braila, eastern Romania.

To decrease the energy consumption, the company decided to replace the old forklift used for commodities handling and dating from 1991 with a new one with high energy efficiency parameters.

The company addressed RoSEFF for financing of this project.

The RoSEFF team performed the analysis of the proposed technology, its potential for energy savings, financial-technical parameters and profitability of the project.

The €13,500 investment allowed the company to increase the production capacity by 95% and decrease the specific energy consumption by 52%, namely from 0.9 to 0.43 litres per tonne of products. The investment will repay from energy savings only in just 5 years, while its effect will be felt immediately after the forklift start of works. This project allowed the local producer to be more energy and cost efficient and sustain the business.

It is a good example that energy efficiency measures are possible and profitable not only in the production industries, but in service and trading industries as well.

This way, the EBRD and RoSEFF support the sustainable financing and implementation of energy efficiency and renewable energy projects by the private sector. Together, the private, residential, and public sectors can make a change in the energy consumption patterns and environmental protection.
